If you made it through the New Year without flooding your home, give yourself a pat on the back.  Insurance claims for leaks from washing machines, pipes and showers are higher on January 2 than any other day of the year, a leading insurer says.
Norwich Union has analysed claims data from the last ten years to find out which days homeowners and drivers should batten down the hatches this year. 
The next danger date for homeowners falls on May Day, when claims for accidental damage around the home rise by 15 per cent. It is perhaps not just a coincidence that accidental damage claims also soar on the August bank holiday, when many children are also home from school.
But while homeowners wrap up their precious belongings on May day, motorcyclists should take the bus.  This bank holiday is the worst day of the year for those on two wheels as claims for motorbike accidents rise by 50 per cent. 
Drivers should perhaps switch to public transport every Friday, as this is the day they are most likely to have an accident - claims are 17 per cent higher than usual. Motorists should also steer clear of their vehicles when the sun is shining. Claims for motor accidents rise by 50 per cent on the hottest days of the year.
We may get an extra hour in bed when the clocks go back, but burglars are more active than ever in the week afterwards. Claims for household thefts usually rise by 5 per cent during this period.
Unsurprisingly, claims for fire damage rise by 50 per cent on Bonfire night, but the day on which you are most likely to set your home alight is Christmas Day. Norwich Union says claims for fire damage soars by 140 per cent on December 25. At least homeowners can take some comfort in the knowledge that while they call the fire brigade they are less likely to have their car stolen than at any other time of the year.

DANGER DATES: 

January 2: Worst day of year for leaks from washing machines, showers and household pipes. Claims rise by 40 per cent.

February 29: One of the safest days of the year. There are fewer household and motor claims than average on the extra day of the leap year.

May Day: Worst day of the year for motorbike accidents with 50 per cent more claims than usual.  Claims for accidental damage in the home also rise by 15 per cent.

August bank holiday: Claims for accidental damage rise by 11 per cent.

October 31: Worst day for malicious damage to your home.  Claims rise by 150 per cent.

December 25: Worst day for fire claims which rise by 140 per cent.

December 31: More accidental damage claims than any other day of the year.  A 30 per cent increase - because of spills on carpets, cigarette burns and damage to mobile phones.
