PARIS (Reuters) Airbus Chief Executive Tom Enders has written to all A380 customers telling them that production of the world's largest aircraft has reached a critical phase and that a planned sharp hike in production is challenging, the European planemaker said on Tuesday.
"The letter reiterated that the A380 ramp-up is challenging and continues to be challenging," a spokesman said. He was speaking after two Gulf-based airlines announced that Airbus had warned them of possible further delays in deliveries, which are already running on average two years late. Enders announced a "major review" of A380 production last week. "Because (the ramp-up) has reached a critical phase, from wave 1 to wave 2, this is the reason why there is a review and this review is standard practice when you reach this stage of transition," the spokesman said, summarizing the letter. Wave 1 refers to the first 25 aircraft produced. These planes had to have extensive amounts of wiring fitted manually after a software coordination problem between French and German plants. Wave 2 planes will be wired automatically. Airbus produced 1 A380 last year and plans to build 13 this year and 25 next year. A source close to Airbus said the production review would take about 2 weeks. Copyright 2008 Reuters Limited.
