Consider the color gray: So calm, so even, so appropriate ... so staid? Now contemplate yellow: So cheerful, so lighthearted ... so frivolous? But the unlikely pairing of these two opposites yields something entirely unexpected: sunny sophistication and urban cool. "Prints that mix yellow with light gray and white just look very unique and fresh," says Lisa Pikul, co-owner of Girl Next Door in Rocky River, Ohio. "Yellow is just the happiest color there is ... I don't know why it took so long to see it again." Perhaps the neutral spirit of gray is enlivened by sunny yellow, or yellow can be taken more seriously when paired with such a somber tone. Whatever the reason, yellow and gray are this season's go-to print combination, seen together in everything from jacquard and batik prints, watercolor swirls and Mondrian geometrics. "Gray matters because it is the summer version of black — it's always appropriate, and it goes with everything," says Marylou Luther, president of the International Fashion Syndicate. "The fact that it's going with yellow is very positive. As van Gogh said, 'Yellow is capable of charming God.' It butters up gray." With the combination coming from designers on high (Prada and Missoni) to contemporary (Nanette Lepore and Trina Turk) to low-cost, fast-fashion (H&M and Target), it suggests an unusual alignment in the fashion firmament — a crowd-pleasing trend. "The fact that consumers are loving this pairing is to me a sign that people are looking for positivity and happiness — a happiness grounded in trustworthiness," says Luther.
