Turn trash into treasure at May 9 FreeMeet

May 8, 2008

Looking for a way to get rid of some outgrown clothes or unneeded kitchen appliances?

MIT Students for Global Sustainability have the answer. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, they will be hosting "FreeMeet," an event where one person's trash becomes another person's treasure.

Members of the MIT community and surrounding area are invited to bring unwanted clothes, books, electronics, small furniture and other items to the Student Center (W20-491). Anyone who wants the items is welcome to take them.

One of the student organizers, junior Kathreen Thome, got the idea for the event because she was looking for ways to get rid of some of her own stuff.

"I started thinking, I have all this stuff I don't want, but someone else might use it," she said.

The students hope to hold two FreeMeets per semester. Their first, held in February, drew 300 people, said Thome.

Clothing, kitchen items, toys, books and electronics were among the most commonly donated items.

"One staff member brought in a perfectly good working TV that they didn't need because they had bought a new plasma TV. A student grabbed that right away," Thome said.

Any leftover items will be donated to Cambridge Shelter.
