Your guide to MIT Earth Week 2008

April 18, 2008

MIT will celebrate Earth Week 2008 with four days of events, beginning on Earth Day (April 22) with a major public address by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick in Kresge Auditorium.

Patrick's speech, titled "Clean Energy for the Commonwealth," is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. About an hour before the governor's remarks, SoCo Creamery, winner of the 2007 Best of Boston Award, will provide free ice cream in Kresge Lobby.

Earth Week festivities on campus offer exhibitions, fairs and a film screening. Highlights of the week are EcoExpo, a showcase of MIT research and community projects relating to sustainability from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23; and the Earth Day Fair, an exhibition of environmental projects by local organizations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, in the Stata Center.

Earth Day Fair participants reflect the partnership between MIT and Cambridge and other communities. Twelve MIT groups, including Campus Dining, Campus Police, Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety will join the City of Cambridge Recycling Division, Zipcar, Save That Stuff Inc. and Red Fire Farm, among others, in the fair.

MIT Earth Day 2008 is organized by the Working Group Recycling Committee (WorkingGreen@MIT), Department of Facilities, Environmental Programs Office, MIT Energy Initiative/Laboratory for Energy and the Environment, Students for Global Sustainability, SAVE, Sloan Net Impact, Sloan Energy & Environment Club and MIT Campus Dining.
