USA Cycling invited eight racers Wednesday to compete in next week's first-ever Olympic BMX Trials, where only the winner is assured a spot on this summer's Beijing-bound team.
Donny Robinson, Mike Day and Steven Cisar — who was second at last weekend's world championships — headline the field for the June 14 event, which will take place on the Beijing replica course at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., just south of San Diego. Robinson will likely be on the Olympic team regardless of what happens at the trials; he's expected to earn a spot on the three-man roster through the lone coaches' discretionary spot, unless he wins the automatic berth. Day skipped the world championship race in China to continue training on the Chula Vista track. "We'll see if that pays off for Mike," said USA Cycling BMX director Mike King. Others in the field include Tyler Brown, Danny Calaug, Kristopher Fox, Bubba Harris and David Herman. Kyle Bennett, who won USA Cycling's year-long points race for an automatic berth, is exempt from the trials, and Randy Stumpfhauser declined an invitation to compete. He was fifth in USA Cycling's BMX rankings, behind only Bennett, Robinson, Day and Cisar. By Stumpfhauser's decision not to compete, Calaug received an automatic bid. Brown, Fox, Herman and Harris were all discretionary invitees to the trials based on various factors, including UCI BMX Supercross World Cup results, national rankings, podium finishes and recent performance. There is no BMX trials for the American women. The U.S. is expected to have only one racer in the Beijing Games; Jill Kintner secured that automatic spot last weekend with a sixth-place finish at the world championships. That showing vaulted Kintner past Arielle Martin by one point, 129-128, in the final USA Cycling rankings used to determine the Olympic qualifier. Copyright 2008 The Associated Press.
