The Nautilus and the Exploration of the Deep Sea
Maybe you know about Captain Nemo. He had a submarine called the Nautilus. That was from Jules Verne’s famous book. It’s called Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. It’s just a story, of course. But it made so many people dream. It pushed real people to explore too. Later on, in the 1900s, a small sub was made. It’s called Alvin. It let scientists go way down deep. It felt kind of like Verne’s stories.
Alvin first went underwater in 1964. It has gone down over 4,500 times since then. This little sub has been super important. It helped find hot water vents on the seafloor. It showed us whole deep-sea worlds we didn’t know about. What Alvin found really helped us understand. It taught us about things that live in tough places. Scientists call them extremophiles. The Cousteau Society and the Conservation Movement
